Washington’s metro operator WMATA has increased security on the city’s subway system and assured passengers that there is ‘no credible threat’ against the network.
Several people have died and many more injured following a series of explosions beside the finish line of the Boston Marathon.
Security is heightened across the USA in the aftermath of the tragedy.
Metro Transit police chief Ronald Pavlik has ordered all day-shift patrol officers to remain on duty through this evening’s rush hour to “increase the security posture of the transit system”.
A statement read: “Metro is taking this step in an abundance of caution. There is no specific or credible threat against the Metro system at this time.”
Passengers in the capital are being urged to report suspicious activity or unattended packages.
New York transport authority MTA said in a statement: “The MTAPD, which patrols LIRR & Metro-North, is increasing patrols coverage and bag inspections.
“All security personnel will remind all employees to be vigilant. The increased coverage will continue until we fully understand the cause of the explosions in Boston. NYPD is also on alert and indicated they will give additional attention to the subway system.”
