Aeromóvel vehicles delivered to World Cup host city

The first two light rail vehicles for Porto Alegre’s elevated Aeromóvel line has arrived in the city ahead of the system’s official opening later this year.

Aeromovel is an atmospheric railway system developed by Coester Group, São Leopoldo, with rail operator Trensurb, which once complete will connect Salgado Filho International Airport and the Estação Aeroporto metro station.

The first two A100 vehicles left manufacturer T’TRANS on April 9 and arrived in Porto Alegre four days later.

The technology uses an air current to push a square plate which is attached to the bottom of each car. The plate acts in the same way as a ship’s sail and can be rotated to control the car’s acceleration.

The chief executive of Trensurb, Humberto Kasper, said: “There is a pride for the teams involved in this project to participate in this moment, when you see the first vehicle being delivered to Trensurb.”

The project is expected to cost R $37.8 million and is part of the city’s infrastructure investment plan ahead of the 2014 World Cup.
