Thales has been awarded re-signalling contract in the Western Cape province in South Africa worth 136 million euro.
A consortium made up of Thales and construction company Maziya will upgrade S&T systems along 250 km of the region’s passenger rail network.
South Africa is in the process of orchestrating one of the largest fleet replacement programmes in the world.
Over the next 20 years, the country’s passenger rail operator PRASA is aiming to buy 7,224 new EMUs at a cost of around 9.7 billion euro to replace ageing rolling stock.
The contract also includes the construction of a control centre to manage train operations for the network.
Announcing the contract award, Justice Tootla, deputy chief executive of Thales South Africa, said: “Being part of the country’s major ground transportation projects is very exciting and we are committed to delivering solutions that positively impact the country’s development.
“The provision of an integrated rail signalling system to the country’s Western Cape Province will ensure efficiency and reliable investments, contributing to a fast developing continent.”
