Train operators in Switzerland and Italy have signed an agreement designed to improve services between the two countries.

SBB and Trenitalia inked a deal in Zurich last week which both companies hope will boost cooperation over the next 10 years.

The agreement will require both SBB and Trenitalia to achieve set targets on the introduction of new trains, better availability and reliability of services for passengers, and improved customer service.

From Autumn this year, passengers on both sides of the border will have access to first class lounges in Zurich and major Italian interchanges.

Another major part of the agreement looks at replacing ETR 470 trainsets with modern ETR 610 Pendolinos by 2015.

Chief executive of Italy’s state-owned rail operator Mauro Moretti said: “We believe strongly in this renewed cooperation.”
