The Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation (THSRC) has awarded a 20 billion yen (£133 million) contract that will see the delivery of the Nangang Extension Project.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and the Toshiba Corporation will install new track and provide electrical and mechanical (E&M) systems for 5km of the 9.2km extension which will link Taipei Station with the new Nangang Station.

MHI will be responsible for the trackwork, installing the overhead power lines and coming up with the E&M systems.

Toshiba will provide systems for train traffic control and maintenance management.

The extension, which is due to open in 2016, builds on the current network which runs between Taipei and Kaohsiung, linking the island’s main metropolitan areas.
