Deutsche Bahn has appointed a new management board to head its 6.5 billion euro Stuttgart 21 project.

Manfred Leger has been appointed as chairman of the management board which is overseeing the transformation of Stuttgart Central station and construction of a new 60 km railway line from Stuttgart to Ulm.

Leger’s most high-profile role was his five years as chief executive of Balfour Beatty Rail in Munich.

Volker Kefer, head of infrastructure at DB, said Leger was a “proven expert with profound knowledge in national and international railway industry and project management”.

The Stuttgart-Ulm route is part of a high-speed network connecting Paris with Strasbourg, Stuttgart, Munich and Vienna.
