Bombardier is to supply 14 Flexity Freedom trams to phase one of a new light rail system in Waterloo, Ontario.

The city’s regional council announced that it had approved a deal with transport authority Metrolinx and the Canadian train manufacturer for a new fleet of vehicles for the future ION light rail network.

Councillor Jim Wideman, chairman of the planning and works committee, said: “The purchase of light rail vehicles for ION is a significant milestone.

“The vehicles symbolize the considerable progress being made to bring this new service to residents in Waterloo Region.”

“Bombardier is proud to be part of this very important expansion of public transit in Ontario by offering rail transportation as a solution for increasing mobility, reducing congestion, and benefiting the regional economy,” said René Lalande, vice-president Bombardier Transportation North America.

Work will start on the trams next year ahead of delivery in summer 2016.
