Latest Northern Hub plans revealed

Listen to this article

Proposals to improve the rail infrastructure between Manchester Piccadilly and Oxford Road station have gone one show as part of £560 million Northern Hub project.

The latest round of proposals include installing “two new platforms at Manchester Piccadilly, adjacent to the existing platform 14, and widening the railway corridor around Oxford Road station”.

Network Rail has said these improvements would allow four more passengers services per hour in each direction and an additional one to two freight trains per hour to travel through central Manchester.

Dyan Crowther, Network Rail’s route managing director, said: “The Northern Hub is an important investment programme for the North of England. It will create space for up for 700 more trains every day and help provide over £4 billion worth of wider economic benefits for the region.

“The plans for Manchester Piccadilly and Oxford Road stations are a key part of the Hub and we look forward to working with stakeholders and the local community to develop the proposals.”

The Northern Hub programme is made up of a series of smaller projects designed to improve current rail links across the north west by 2019.
