New funding model revives Barcelona’s Sagrera station build

Spain’s political leaders have signed a new agreement, increasing the role of private investment in constructing a new intermodal railway station in Barcelona.

Work can now continue on Sagrera station in the north of the city, albeit at a budget reduced from 800 million euros to 650 million.

Sagrera station will connect to the Barcelona-Madrid high-speed line and the recently-opened extension to the French border.

The new financing model will rely more heavily on private investment, with the economic downturn in Spain impacting heavily on public infrastructure projects around the country.

A memorandum of understanding was signed last week between Adif and the city council, in the presence of the Minister of Public Works, Ana Pastor, and mayor Xavier Trias

The new station will be surrounded by a new public park, offices and shops, all of which have been designed to revitalise the surrounding area.

Trias said: “The mayor said “station Sagrera der has been the epicenter of an area that has potential to become one of the main hubs of the city.”
