C2c to trial smart card ticketing in the South East

Train operator c2c is to upgrade ticketing systems at suburban station outside London as part of a government initiative to expannd paperless ticket services in the South East.

Minister are investing an initial £2.85 million into the paperless ticketing trial, which c2c will roll out from April next year.

By the end of 2015, the government is aiming to have the infrastructure in place for smart ticketing across the whole South East region. The results of this trial will shape the development of the DfT’s £45 million project.

Transport Minister Norman Baker said: “Smart ticketing is the passport for more efficient and flexible travel for passengers and I want to see this technology rolled out as far and as quickly as possible.

“This pilot with c2c is a vital step in making that ambition a reality and will be used as a benchmark to drive innovation across the rail network for years to come.”

  1. Southern rail have already got this across the whole of their network outside of London and it is coming to london stations in december so i’m not quite sure why people are saying this is so new and exciting.
