Edinburgh tram works completed along York Place

York Place has reopened in Edinburgh, as the city’s new tram network edges closer to its first day of operation.

The City of Edinburgh Council has said that York Place’s reopening has come four months ahead of the project’s revised schedule.

Sections of road along the new tram route are now gradually coming back into use. Princes Street reopened at the end of 2012 and work at St Andrew Square was completed in April this year.

Transport convener Lesley Hinds said: “Our target remains to have a service up and running by summer next year but we’ll bring this date forward if we can. However, there is still some construction work to be completed and, following that, a major programme of testing, commissioning and driver training.”

The next milestone is expected this autumn, with the West End construction nearing an end.

Announcing the reopening of York Place, the city council again stressed that the project remains within the revised £776 million budget, having been increased from £545 million in 2011.

The project has been making good progress of late and although two years behind the original completion date, the system looks well on course for a 2014 opening.
