More than half of the railway systems in the Gotthard Base Tunnel have now been installed, according to AlpTransit Gotthard.

The announcement follows the very first ride through the world’s longest rail tunnel on August 30.

Although the tunnel won’t officially open for another three years, contractors and officials made their way through the 57 km tunnel to see the progress being made.

AlpTransit Gotthard described the event as the start of a 1,000-day countdown to handing over the line to operator SBB.

The tunnel remains on course for a 2016 opening, despite issues being raised about the quality of the drainage pipes used on the line.
