Transport authority Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) has issued a tender for 71 quick acceleration EMUs for regional routes in Germany.

The new vehicles have been described by VRR as a precursor to the introduction of new faster services as part of the Rheine-Ruhr Express (RRX) project.

The new double-deck electric trains will operate on the current RE1, RE4, RE5, RE6 and RE11 Regional Express routes.

As well as supplying the rolling stock, the manufacturer would also be required to agree a 30-year maintenance contract for the new fleet.

The new trains will go into operation from December 2018 on the current Regional Express routes prior to RRX.

Each new train will have a capacity for 400 seats, a minimum top speed of 160 km/h and a minimum acceleration of 1 m/s.
