A €2.2 billion planned extension of Stockholm’s metro system will drive the construction of 78,000 new homes, according to city officials.

Councillors in Stockholm and its surrounding districts unveiled details of the proposed expansion of the city’s metro network this week.

The vision looks to build 19 kilometres of new track and nine new stations.

The Blue Line will be extended to Nacka, while new links will also be built from Akalla to Barkarby, a southern extension will see new stations built in Sofia and Gullmarsplan, and a new branch line will be constructed between Odenplan, Hagastaden and Arenastaden by 2020.

Initial studies have already looked into the feasibility of the plans but work isn’t expected to begin in earnest until 2016.
