Designs have been unveiled for a planned redevelopment of 95th Street station on Chicago’s upgraded Red Line.

Images of a re-imagined 95th Street station have gone on show – a project that is expected to begin next year, cost around $240 million and create 700 construction jobs in the city.

CTA will be completing a major reconfiguration of the intermodal station as part of a wider programme of improvement works across Chicago’s busiest urban rail line.

The Red Line South reopened in October following a $425 million rebuild of the line.

The integrated rail and bus interchange was built in 1969 and is currently used by around 20,000 passengers every day.

Chicago’s mayor, Rahm Emanuel, said: “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make a significant investment in both the South Side and the Red Line and its riders.

“The Red Line is the backbone of our transportation network and this new station will drive economic activity throughout the city for years to come.
