Onboard communications company Nomad Digital has acquired a majority stake in state-owned Portugese rail maintenance firm EMEF.

The new joint venture, Nomad Tech, will “plug the £5 billion market” for servicing and repairs to rolling stock fleets around the world, Nomad said in a statement.

EMEF is Portugal’s leading maintenance company and utilises telemanagement systems to identify and treat faults early.

Nomad chief executive Andrew Taylor said: “The combination of Nomad’s market leading position, together with EMEF’s in-depth technical know-how is highly complementary.

“Fundamentally, this should mean reduced costs for transportation companies, and better services and safety for passengers.”
