Eurostar breaks 10 million passenger barrier

Listen to this article

Eurostar has transported 10 million passengers in a single year for the first time in its history.

The cross-border train operator has announced that in 2013 it carried 10 million passengers, 20 years since the launch of the first train between London, Paris and Brussels in November 1994.

The record takes the total number of Eurostar passengers to 140 million.

Nick Mercer, commercial director for Eurostar, said: “2013 has been a record breaking year for Eurostar.  With a leap in passenger numbers as well as the introduction of new routes and new destinations, we are seeing growing demand from customers across Europe and indeed around the world.

“As we enter our twentieth year of operation, we have a year of activity planned on the run up to our 20th birthday in November.”

  1. This milestone provides a useful positive headline – even if it reminds investors that Eurostar promised in its prospectus to achieve these numbers by 15 years ago – but it’s not clear to the general reader what the figure actually represents.

The stated figure would suggest that Eurostar carried 10M individual passengers last year: if so, the number of single journeys would presumably be not far below 20M, since I imagine most passengers buy return trips, a much more impressive achievement. Presumably 10M passengers really means 10M journeys, which would boil down to 5M or less individual customers, depending on the number of single journeys and regular repeat customers.

It would be helpful in cases like this if you could provide a brief explanation of what the real numbers are, in terms of journeys (and individual customers if possible), rather than just publicising the somewhat misleading PR messsages of train operators.
