Russian Railways (RZD) has said it will be “forced to reduce significantly” its research and development (R&D) investment in 2014.

The announcement was made in a press release outlining the success of a series of innovations in the past year including the ‘smart train’ management system which will support the movement of visitors and athletes during the Winter Olympics in Sochi next month.

Other developments have included the unveiling of the next-generation gas turbine locomotive GT1h and the introduction of a new energy management system across the company.

RZD senior vice president Valentin Gapanovich said: “Russian gas turbine locomotives have no analogues in the world.

“In 2014, it is planned to complete the full range of tests. In the future, they could operate between Novy Urengoy – Surgut – Tyumen, and later on the Baikal Amur Main Line. By 2020, the Company will take delivery of 40 gas turbine locomotives.”
