The cost of subway fares has been frozen in Madrid for the first in 30 years thanks to a successful programme of cost cutting and overseas investment.
President of the Community of Madrid, which took over operation of the metro in 1985, Ignacio Gonzalez made the announcement during a visit to to see the progress being made on the Line 9 extension to Mirasierra.
Madrid Metro has highlighted the income from its international consultancy as one of the key factors that have enabled the city to fix fares in 2014.
This week, the first three of 73 6000 Series cars are being shipped to Buenos Aires as part of a €32.6 million deal with the Argentinian capital.
Madrid Metro is preparing the vehicles at its Canillejas depot and once delivered, will provide technical assistance as the rolling stock is brought into operation on Buenos Aires’ Line B.
Modern 7000, 8000 and 9000 Series trains will take the 6000 Series’ place on Line 9, making the average age of Madrid’s metro trains just 12 years old, said Gonzalez.
