Listen to this article

Bombardier Transportation South Africa is to supply 240 TRAXX locomotives to operator Transnet Freight Rail (TFR).

The contract, which is expected to be confirmed by the end of March following a cooling down period, will form part of a major fleet renewal involving four different suppliers.

The locomotives will be designed for speeds of up to 100 km/h.

Bombardier will build all the new locomotives in South Africa and has committed to sourcing 60 per cent of the materials locally.

In accordance with South Africa’s Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) program, the project will create a significant number of jobs.
