ADIF has successfully completed ERTMS Level 2 trials on the high-speed route between Albacete-Alicante.

The line will become the first in Spain to utilise the modern signalling system now that it has received approval to be rolled out across the entire 165-kilometre route, Which opened in June last year.

The introduction of ERTMS Level 2 will further reduce journey times between Madrid and Alicante.

Unlike ETCS Level 1, which monitors train positions intermittently as they pass over fixed transmitters, ETCS Level 2 provides continuous train control through a radio-based system.

Ignacio Rodriguez, transport information solutions managing director for Spain and Portugal, said: “The signalling project, technologically the most complex of those implemented so far in Spain, was completed in 18 months.

“Furthermore, the project, which is also financed by the EIB, was completed totally in accordance with the original tender budget.”
