Capital Metro has been awarded $50 million by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to fund the purchase of new rail cars for Austin’s commuter rail system.

Of the $50 million, $28 million will finance the procurement of four new vehicles and the remaining $22 million will fund the construction of a new downtown Capital Metro station.

Capital Metro currently operates a fleet of six dual-mode Stadler GTW rail cars. Capital Metro said the new vehicles will double the system’s current capacity.

Capital Metro president and chief executive officer Linda Watson said: “We all know traffic problems are growing, and this funding will allow Capital Metro to significantly improve both the frequency and capacity of MetroRail, which will really help people with their commutes.”
