The Al Sufouh Tramway in Dubai is to open on November 11, it has been announced.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and ruler of Dubai, confirmed the official launch date following a test run on the first section of the new network.

Dubai’s tram system will be the first in the world to run exclusively catenary free. The 14.6-kilometre network utilises Alstom’s APS system, which only electrifies the section of track that the tram is travelling over.

The Al Sufouh network, which will be operated by Serco, is being commissioned in two phases. The full network will serve 17 stops and operate 25 trams.

As well as constructing the tramway, the Alstom-Besix consortium will maintain the system for the next 13 years – a contract that includes an optional five-year extension.

The new trams will be split into three sections – a first class Gold Suite, a Silver Class carriage and a separate car for women and children.
