Alstom and Bombardier are among several international rolling stock manufacturers to submit expressions of interest for New South Wales’ $2.8 billion intercity train project.
The NSW Government is looking for manufacturers to build and maintain a fleet of new trains to operate long-distance services between the South Coast, Blue Mountains, Central Coast and Newcastle.
NSW hopes to roll the new trains out gradually between 2019 and 2024.
Alstom, Bombardier, CAF, Downer EDI Rail Pty Ltd and CNR Changchun  Railway Vehicles, Hyundai Rotem, Stadler and UGL Rail Services, Mitsubishi Electric Australia and CSR Corporation have all registered their interest.
The next-generation fleet, which will be made up of around 520 new cars, will allow NSW TrainLink to retire its V-set trains and transfer its Oscar trainsets to the Sydney Trains suburban and commuter network.
Minister for Transport and Minister for the Hunter, Gladys Berejiklian, said:Â “This is a very important project, and we are finally delivering these brand new trains to customers who were for so long ignored by the former Labor Government.
“We had an industry briefing in May, and as a result we had a very positive response from well qualified and experienced organisations. There is now a strong contingent of local and international contenders keen to be involved in this project.”
