Hong Kong’s MTR Corporation has invited expressions of interest for a tender to supply 78 new eight-car trainsets.

The new vehicles, which will need to be compatible with communication-based train control (CBTC) signalling, will replace the existing stock on Hong Kong’s Island Line, Kwun Tong Line, Tseung Kwan O Line and Tsuen Wan Line.

Pre-qualification for the tender is expected to be completed before the end of the month and a formal Invitation to Tender is scheduled for January 2015.

The new trains, which will have a capacity of 2,500 passengers and operate at a maximum speed of 80 km/h, will be delivered progressively between early 2019 and late 2022.
