What was the most interesting original design in rail in 2014?

Listen to this article

When you have the scope of just the word design, it could be rolling stock, a new station building or even a whole project, what would you choose?

Our editors put their heads together and came up with this list. Which others would you add?

Canary Wharf Station

“The design of Crossrail’s new Canary Wharf station has been likened to a ship moored in the dock, reflecting Canary Wharf’s past as the centre for global maritime commerce and its future, better integrated with the local community and the rest of London.”

West Kowloon Terminus

“Designed by Andrew Bromberg and his team at AEDAS in association with AECOM, the new West Kowloon station will be the Hong Kong terminus of the new Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link.”

New Tube for London

“PriestmanGoode and Transport for London’s design for a new, standardised train for London’s deep tube incorporates many features including air-cooling, walk-through carriages and the option for automation.”

Gravesend station remodelling

“Increasing the capacity of Gravesend station to take 12-car trains didn’t just involve lengthening the platforms but adding an extra one as well, in between the other two.”

Manchester Victoria station

“Voted “the worst station in the country” in a 2009 Department for Transport-commissioned report, Network Rail’s plans to rebuild Manchester Victoria were timely and welcome.”
