San Francisco extends LRV order

San Francisco mayor Edwin Lee and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) have jointly announced plans to expand an existing order with Siemens for a fleet of new light rail vehicles (LRV).

The order includes an extra 40 trams on top of the $648 million contract placed last year for 175 trams for the Muni light rail network.

A decision to invest $210 million in additional LRVs was approved by the SFMTA board of directors last week. The order is the first of two options for a total of 85 vehicles included in the original deal.

Mayor Lee said: “Today, we are accelerating improvements to Muni by expanding San Francisco’s light rail fleet while we also replace the entire fleet with new, state of the art Siemens vehicles.

“Expanding the fleet will make our city’s public transportation system more reliable, safer, easier to maintain, and ready to meet the demands of a growing city and growing ridership.”

The first of the new trams will enter in service in 2016.
