The Finnish city of Tampere has issued a tender to find a private-sector partner to build and maintain the trams for its proposed light rail network.
The city is planning on procuring 15 to 30 trams and has specified a combination of 30-metre and and 40-metre bi-directional vehicles. The supplier will work alongside the project’s main contractor to complete the first phase of the network by 2018/19.
A final decision is to made on the €250 million project’s construction in 2016.
Phase one of the route will link the city centre with the suburb of Hervanta. The plan is then to extend it by 2022 to Tampere’s central hospital and the Lentävänniemi suburb.
According to the city council, 30 per cent of the total infrastructure costs will be met by the Finnish government.
