London Underground appoints new COO

London Underground has appointed former Virgin Atlantic head of operations Steve Griffiths as its new chief operating officer.

Griffiths will assume the role from May this year, taking over from interim chief operating officer Nick Brown.

Starting his career has an apprentice at Rolls-Royce, Griffiths has held several senior positions at Virgin Atlantic, joining as director of engineering before being promoted to chief operating officer in 2009.

Mike Brown, managing director, London Underground & London Rail, said: “Steve comes to us from Virgin Atlantic Airways, where he led significant changes to transform the company and improve the service to passengers.

“He will play a key role as we continue to modernise the way we serve our customers and improve the Underground to meet the demands of the city’s rapidly growing population.

“Nick Brown, who’s done a great job as interim chief operating officer since joining us in December, will stay until June to ensure continuity and will remain fully accountable for LU Operations and Maintenance until Steve takes the helm.”
