Planning work is set to begin on the long-awaited Melbourne Metro rail tunnel.

Victoria’s new Labour government has committed $40 million to ‘fast-track’ the project to construct a nine-kilometre twin-bore tunnel below Melbourne city centre.

The project will create five new underground stations at Arden, Parkville, CBD North, CBD South and Domain.

Premier Daniel Andrews has announced the creation of the Melbourne Metro Rail Authority to undertake further design work and detailed site investigations.

If everything progresses as planned, the authority will begin the tendering process in 2016 ahead of construction work commencing in 2018.
