Siemens is to supply 12 low-floor trams for the German city of Ulm.

Ulm is the second German city to invest in Avenio trams after Munich, which now has all eight of its new vehicles in passenger service.

Siemens signed the €32 million contract, which includes an option for six additional trams, on May 22.

The 31-metre Avenio M light rail vehicles will go into operation on Line 2 – a new 10.5-kilometre long line which was approved by local authorities earlier this month. Line 2 will connect the city’s northern district with Ulm’s main railway station.

Siemens will deliver the first of the five-car trams by mid-2017 and the last by early 2018.

Sandra Gott-Karlbauer, chief executive of the urban transport business unit at Siemens, said: “This order is an important milestone for the streetcar business at Siemens.

“After Munich, the order from Ulm is the second one we have received from Germany. All eight new trams have been in service in the Bavarian capital since the start of the year.

“But at the same time the vehicles for Ulm represent a first too. This is the first time a multi-articulated version of the Avenio is being deployed.”
