The first Citadis tram for the Rio de Janeiro VLT light rail network has arrived in the city to begin testing.

Shipped from the Port of Antwerp last month, the tram is the first of 32 units Alstom is building for Rio. The first five will be manufactured in La Rochelle, France, before production is shifted to São Paulo.

The first section of the line is scheduled to enter into service at the end of 2015, linking the surrounding districts with Santos Dumont Airport. The tram network is expected to carry 300,000 passengers each day.

Alstom is supplying its Citadis tram and APS ground-level power supply system, which uses a combination of third rail and supercapacitors, as part of the VLT Carioca consortium delivering the project.

The 28-kilometre light rail network is expected to be partially opened in time for the Olympics.
