RATP El Djazaïr has launched services on an extended Line 1 of the Algiers metro system.

The extension, which was formally opened by Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal, adds three new stations to the existing line, connecting the former Haï El Badr terminus to the El Harrach Centre station in the south-east of the city.

Later this year, a fourth station, El Harrach, will open.

Two more extensions, one to the north and one to the south of the city, will further add to Line 1 by 2017.

By 2020, Line 1 will also connect to Houari Boumediene international airport.

A southern extension will take passengers to the Ain Naadja station and include three new stops.
