Implenia to build second Bözberg railway tunnel

Listen to this article

Swiss contractor Implenia is to construct a new, larger tunnel to replace the Bözberg railway tunnel.

Implenia has been awarded a CHF 145 million contract by SBB to construct a new twin-track railway tunnel to replace the existing Bözberg tunnel in the Canton of Aargau in the northern Switzerland.

The Bözberg line, which runs between Basel and Brug, also connects to the Gotthard route, another key corridor currently being upgraded to support four-metre containers.

Construction is due to begin in 2016 and be completed by 2020. Work will also be undertaken to convert the former tunnel into a rescue tunnel; this will be completed by 2022.

Tunnelling will start at the tunnel’s southern portal in Schinznach-Dorf.
