A new broad-gauge line has opened between Gandhidham and Tuna-Tekra Port in Gujarat, India.  Initially, the line will be used by four trains a day carrying coal and fertilizer.

The 17km-long line, which was inaugurated by Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, was built in just one year – May 2014 to May 2015. At a total cost of Rs 1850 million (£17 million), this is the first Non-Government Railway Project of Indian Railways under the NGR policy of 2012.

This project has been funded by Kandla Port Trust (KPT) which also built 6km of the line, the other 11km was constructed by the Western Railway Zone if Indian Railways.

This is the fourth port to be connected to the rail network under a Ministry of Railways scheme launched in 2012, the others being Dhamra, Jaigarh and Dighi. Approval for another five has been granted in principle.
