Belgian infrastructure manager Infrabel has awarded a Siemens/Cofely-Fabricom consortium the contract to upgrade more than 2,200 kilometres of track to ETCS Level 2 signalling.

The €510 million contract is part of a wider initiative to install a common signalling system across the whole of Europe, boosting cross-border interoperability.

The contract, which includes the installation of the ATP system and the electronic interlocking equipment, is due to be completed by late 2025.

Some sections of the Belgian rail network are already operating with ETCS Level 1.
