A new freight terminal in Rotterdam, described as one of the most advanced and automated in the world, has welcomed its first commercial rail service.

The Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) terminal on the Maasvlakte has completed its connection to the main line Dutch rail network, having opened its doors in May.

On August 25, Distri Rail became the first operator to run a commercial service from the terminal, which has two rail cranes and six tracks of 750 metres in length.

ProRail owns, and will maintain, the main line rail connection.

RWG describes itself as one of the most advanced and automated freight terminals in the world.
