Irish Rail to install asset monitoring technology on commuter fleet

Irish Rail is to extend the use of monitoring technology on its train fleet after signing a new deal with US company Trimble.

Trimble, which has already installed its diagnostics monitoring system on Irish Rail’s Hyundai Rotem Class 22000 DMU fleet, will now roll the technology out to the operator’s CAF 29000 commuter vehicles.

The Nexala R2M system uses a combination of shore-based and on-board equipment to monitor the condition of a train in real time, communicating to the depot any faults or performance issues.

The Class 22000 programme was the first time Irish Rail had retrofitted a class of its trains with this kind of real-time diagnostic tool.

Peter Smyth, Irish Rail’s chief mechanical engineer, said: “Nexala’s real-time remote diagnostic system was successfully rolled out across our InterCity Class 22000 fleet in 2013. This has resulted in significant maintenance savings, incident prevention and recovery, and improved operational efficiencies.

“We look forward to equipping the CAF 29000 commuter fleet so we can experience similar benefits to the implementation on the InterCity Class 22000 fleet.”
