Norfolk Southern has presented the first of a new class of eco shunting locomotives in Atlanta.

The 3,000-horsepower loco, which meet the strict Tier 3 emissions standard, will be put to work at Norfolk Southern’s Inman Yard this year.

Norfolk Southern said in a statement: “Annually, the 10 units will account for 6.6 fewer tonnes of particulate matter and 155 fewer tonnes of nitrogen oxides pollutants generally associated with smog and acid rain.

“As more eco units are delivered to Atlanta in 2016, the clean-air benefits will be even greater.”

Funded in part by federal grants, the 10 units have been built by Norfolk Southern from Electro-Motive Diesel components.
