Italian open access operator NTV has decided to award Alstom a contract to supply eight new trains.

Alstom said it expected to finalise a contract in the coming weeks for the new “high-speed” train sets.

The Italian operator already has a fleet of 25 AGV trains which operate services under the Italo brand.

An Alstom spokesman said the company would not comment on the ongoing negotiations or release details on the technical specification of the new vehicles.

NTV has said the new trains will be based on the non-tilting Pendolino model, with a top speed of 250 km/h.

The first new train is expected to be completed by December, 2017.
