Alstom preferred bidder for NS intercity train order

Listen to this article

Dutch national rail operator NS has named Alstom as the preferred bidder to supply 80 new 200 km/h intercity trains.

NS said Alstom’s bid scored highest for reliability, maintainability of trains, energy efficiency, design and after sales support.

Unsuccessful bidders now have the opportunity to appeal against the decision during the mandatory standstill period. NS hopes to finalise the contract this summer, with a view to receiving the first train in 2021.

NS has specified single-deck units which are compatible with both the conventional network and the high-speed HSL.

The new fleet, which will equate to around 25,000 seats, will gradually replace the existing ICM and IC Direct units.

The order includes an option for additional trains in the future, as NS looks to continue a major renewal of its train fleet.
