HS2 recommends city centre station for Sheffield

HS2 chairman Sir David Higgins has recommended running high-speed services directly to Sheffield’s Midland rail station rather than divert it around the city centre.

The preferred option had been to build a spur off HS2 from a station at Meadowhall to Sheffield’s city centre.

In a report published today (July 7), Sir David Higgins suggests that a city centre option which uses the existing railway would reduce travel times to Leeds, York and Newcastle and would cut the cost of the project by £1 billion.

Sir David Higgins said: “Projects of HS2’s size, scale and significance should seek to provide the maximum benefit for the people they serve. Screen Shot 2016-07-07 at 09.19.16

“I have listened to the very constructive comments and discussions that have taken place on how HS2 should best serve South Yorkshire and recommend the option of HS2 services using the existing city centre station.

The new route would open up the possibility of high-speed trains calling at Chesterfield. HS2 will also examine options for a parkway station along part of the route that runs parallel to the M18.

“Decisions of this scale sometimes involve compromise, and through dialogue I believe we have reached the best solution for South Yorkshire,” Higgins added.

An announcement is expected on the HS2 Phase 2 route sometime later this year.

  1. Brilliant! Sheffield complain, get what they want, it now takes longer to get from Sheffield to London than Leeds to London!

  2. Agree with the HS2 recommendation – city centre is best for this railway’s stations, and it’ll also save a Billion.
