The first section of track has been laid in Sydney for the city’s new CBD and South East light rail system.

Transport for NSW has released a video showing the first 60-metre length of track being lowered into position in Kensington.

The network will stretch for 12 kilometres around the city centre connecting up Circular Quay and Central, the Moore Park sporting and entertainment precinct and Sydney Football Stadium, Randwick Racecourse, the University of NSW and Prince of Wales Hospital at Randwick.

Major civils works will be completed in April 2018 and the line is scheduled to go into service in 2019.

Premier Mike Baird said: “It’s great to see another of our major public transport infrastructure projects taking shape.

“Light rail will change the way people commute through the heart of our city – we once again thank residents, businesses, commuters and motorists for their patience as construction powers ahead.”
