Seattle’s Sound Transit has has signed off a $554 million order with Siemens for 122 light rail vehicles (LRV).

Production of the LRVs will take place several hundred miles down the West Coast of the United States in Sacramento.

Siemens has said the new units will be larger than the existing fleet, although the precise capacity and final interior design is yet to be confirmed.

Early renderings show cantilever seats and hooks for hanging up to four bikes per vehicle.

Sound Transit is planning to almost triple the size of its LRV fleet to support an expansion plan which will add more than 48 kilometres to the network over the next seven years.

Delivery of the fleet will begin in 2019 in preparation for the opening of the light rail extension between the University of Washington and Northgate in 2021.
