Goteborgs Sparvagar, the transit authority for the Swedish city of Gothenburg, has ordered 40 new Flexity low-floor trams from a joint venture of Bombardier Transportation and Vossloh Kiepe.

The contract, worth approximately €140 million, includes an option for up to 60 additional trams, valid until 2026.

The new Flexity trams will have double-glazing on all windows and doors, to cope with winters on Sweden’s west coast, and are designed to have high capacity while providing easy access for wheelchairs and other passengers with either mobility needs or heavy luggage.

The first two trams, which will use a Vossloh Kiepe propulsion system married to Bombardier Flexx bogies, will be delivered to Gothenburg in spring 2019 before undergoing a 20,000 km acceptance programme. Once production deliveries commence, the new trams will be phased in to replace the existing tram fleet.

Announcing the contract, Göteborgs SpÃ¥rvägar chairman Endrick Schubert said: “Bombardier is a leading tram supplier and these trams will form an important contribution to further developing public transport in Gothenburg. We have chosen the best tram for our city.”
