MTR has brought into service an extension of the Kwun Tong Line to Ho Man Tin and Whampoa.

Construction began on the 2.6-kilometre extension, which was opened on October 23, in 2011.

MTR says the extension will relieve traffic congestion around Ho Man Tin and Whampoa. The station at Ho Man Tin has now become the largest interchange station on the network.

“Extending an existing railway line to a densely built-up urban area like Whampoa and the complex excavation under the hilly terrain in Ho Man Tin were challenges which our colleagues had to overcome,” said Lincoln Leong, the chief executive officer of MTR Corporation.

“I am very pleased to see the two new stations are now open and the local community can enjoy MTR’s safe, reliable and convenient train service.”

The signalling system, including ATC and ATS, the track infrastructure and the overhead electrification were delivered by Alstom.
