Siemens is to supply 27 light rail vehicles for an extension of the Twin Cities’ Metro Transit Southwest line.

The Metropolitan Council is adding to the 59 S70 trams already operating on the system’s Green and Blue lines.

Siemens is currently building five more S70s for Metro Transit and the first of the new vehicles will be delivered to Minnesota in 2019.

Two cars a month will be delivered after that from Siemens’ manufacturing facility in Sacramento, California.

The new units will undergo night testing on the Blue Line and must complete more than 800 km of trial running before going into passenger service in 2021.

The new trams will be fitted with ‘cutters’ to remove ice from OLE lines.
