Austrian rail freight operator Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo has placed an order with Bombardier for three Traxx AC3 Last Mile Locomotives.

The contract includes maintenance for eight years as well as options for three more locomotives and to extend the maintenance agreement for an additional 24 years.

Christian Diewald, managing director, Bombardier Transportation Austria, said: “We are very pleased that we could win Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo as an additional customer for the Traxx AC3 locomotives and that we now have already placed the second order for locomotives in Austria.

“With the agreement now concluded, Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo have chosen a solution that ensures maximum flexibility and reliability.”

The AC3 Last Mile Locomotives include a diesel engine and battery which allow the locomotive to operate across sections of non-electrified railway, removing the need for a separate diesel shunting locomotive.

Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo plans to begin operating the new locomotives next year.
