Caen la Mer has ordered 23 Citadis X05 trams from Alstom to replace its current guided bus system.
Alstom said the lightweight trams will provide a more reliable service than the existing system, which will close and replaced by a new three-line light rail system.
The €52 million order includes options for up to nine additional units.
Features will include LED lighting and USB charging points.
The new vehicles will be delivered from summer 2018 and are due to enter passenger service in September 2019.
Jean-Baptiste Eyméoud, president of Alstom France, said: “I am very proud that the agglomeration community of Caen la Mer has chosen Alstom.
“The trams of the Citadis range, which have been adopted by 55 cities worldwide, combine tried-and-tested technology with ease of modularity to offer reliability, comfort and customisation.”
