John Holland has been awarded a contract worth almost $600 million to extend the South Morang line to Mernda, north of Melbourne.
The long-awaited Mernda Rail Extension includes eight kilometres of new railway between South Morang station and Mernda.
As well as new stations at Mernda and Marymede, an additional station, which hadn’t been included in initial proposals, will be built at Hawkstowe.
The two-year project is expected to break ground in the next few months.
The suburban rail link connects Flinders Street station in Melbourne with the city’s northern suburbs.
Victoria’s state government has said the project will create up to 3,000 jobs through its construction and within the supply chain.
John Holland’s chief executive officer, Joe Barr, said: “We’re proud to be able to provide the community with a solution that will reduce travel time and improve liveability in the local area with better connections, as well as creating hundreds of jobs.”
